Island Teams Tours In a busy weekend schedule, both of the Senior Island sides had mixed results. The men who travelled to Manchester, won 1 of 3 but had a great experience, playing some solid team basketball. The Women also played well to gain victory in overtime in their first game, but ran out of steam in the second. Both teams took many positives from the weekend. |

Yorkshire Guernsey Basketball Leagues
BASKETBALL UPTON MATCH REPORT
Saturday 9th June at the Langford Centre Jersey
Final Score
FJ CARTER CELTICS 57 – 70 LE MONT SAINT GARAGE
In the final domestic Basketball game of the season both teams were looking to complete their retrospective treble after winning both the League and knockout in their home islands.
The game started at a steady pace with both teams matching each other basket for basket. Celtics seemed to have a game plan to not allow Michael Beausire into the game, by man marking him with their big players Chris Byrne and Dave Middleton.
This freed up LMS island player Mark Barnett who hit 3 back to back baskets keeping LMS in the Game. The first quarter ended LMS 16 – 19 Celtics.
The second quarter Celtics were quick off the mark with Dave Middleton making 2 easy lay-ups and a 3 pointer give the Jersey team a nice cushion. LMS responded by introducing the pace of Peter Beausire and Jan Renouf to the game who both worked hard caused problems by stealing the ball from the Celtics offence and fast breaking up the court. With this added support New Zealander James Tracey found his jump and strength to drive through the key to convert some strong points. Celtics were not willing to give LMS an easy ride, with the experience of Chris Byrne they were also making so important points, at the halfway point the score was LMS 40 – 35 Celtics.
With only a 5 point difference the game still could have gone either way, a crowd had now started to gather and were getting behind both teams. The 3rd quarter belonged to Renouf of LMS and Middleton of Celtic, who both seemed to be everywhere on the court leading by example and keeping both there teams in the game. Neither team could be separated this quarter again, there were some glimpses of excellent play from LMS with James Tracey providing a no look pass to Peter Beausire who converted with a reverse lay-up and Mark Barnett making a buzzer shot with 2 seconds on the clock to keep his team 5 points clear going into the final quarter.
The first 3 minutes of the final quarter belonged to the Guernsey Champions, who built a 6 – 0 lead with big man Nick Lawlor converting rebounds into baskets. The Celtic’s had no answer to this and slowed the game pace down due to a lot of tired legs. LMS looked far from tired and continued to dominate and convert baskets by stretching the lead to 13 points, winning 70 –57. LMS top scorers were Mark Barnett and James Tracey with 15, followed by Jan Renouf 13 and Nick Lawlor 12. Celtics leading scorers were Dave Middleton 16 & Chris Bryne 13.
