National League Basketball - Division Two South West
In association with Carey Olsen and Financial Risk Management – sponsors of Guernsey Women’s Basketball.
UWIC Archers 56 v Guernsey 94
Guernsey got their National league campaign off to a flyer with a comprehensive victory over UWIC Archers in Cardiff.
The Guernsey team lead from start to finish and played some great basketball along the way. Guernsey started strong and pressured the ball from the outset leading to turnovers and fast break points. Liz Kerr and Emma Pattimore controlled the offence brilliantly and with Gemma Loveridge and Amy Wright working well in the post positions, UWIC had no answer to the backdoor cuts which lead to easy scores. The second and third quarters saw the pace slow and UWIC slowly come back into it but the lead remained at 25 with Guernsey able to rotate their players and rest for the game the following day. The fourth quarter saw Guernsey up the tempo again as they looked to finish on a high note and carry some momentum into the Birmingham game. Kerr, together with Jenny Rees and Gemma Loveridge made some nice scores to push the lead out to 56-94 by the buzzer.
Kerr finished with 20, while Amy Wright and Gemma Loveridge added 19 & 16 respectively.
MVP – Liz Kerr
Guernsey 49 v South Birmingham Bears 77
Guernsey hosted Birmingham for their first home game of the season – a team who were most coaches tip for winners of Division Two.
The game started slowly as both teams tried to find their feet and it was the Bears who settled first to lead at the end of the first quarter 11-25. Guernsey began to fight back in the second as Rochelle Vaudin managed to shut down the Bears top player, Emma Fare. Fare, an England Under 19 international could not shake her marker and as a result, Guernsey closed the gap to 9 by halftime. Into the third and Guernsey closed the gap a further 3 points before some vital errors gifted the Bears a 9-0 run to carry a comfortable 13 point lead into the final quarter. Liz Kerr tried to rally the team as she controlled the offence but the experience of the Bears forward line kept tabs on Gemma Loveridge and Amy Wright as they struggled to find the basket. Jenny Rees had more luck as she battled hard to find good positions and she capped a good weekend in her debut matches with another 10 points. As Guernsey tired and rotated their bench, Birmigham pulled away to win 49-77, a scoreline that did not reflect the close fought first three quarters.
Kerr finished with 12 and Jenny Rees 10 for Guernsey.
MVP – Rochelle Vaudin
Next Game is 19th October @ Hamble V Bristol Storm
YORKSHIRE GUERNSEY BASKETBALL
Shootin Starz A 34 v Louvre Group 36
The Womens league got underway with an overtime thriller on Wednesday night. Both teams were sporting new line-ups with Louvre adding the experienced Jenny Rees to their ranks. The game was a scrappy affair with Rees the one standout player as she scored 18 and hand a hand in everything good that Louvre did. Shootin Starz battled hard and fough their way back into it to actually lead heading into the last minute but Louvre managed to find the basket one more time to take the game into the extra period. Again it remaind close but it was Louvre who nicked the win with Rees converting the final two points of the Game.
MVP – Jenny Rees
Goldridge Estate Agents One 71 v Bredoyle 48
Last years champs minus their two big guns, easily defeated Bredoyle in the opening Division 2 contest. Shek Sessay and Chris Lamb have both moved up into Division 1 but they were hardly missed as GEA lead from start to finish. Phil English was all over the court as he hussled and harried the Bredoyle guards. His shooting was also on top form as he lead all scorers with 18. Nick Ford was on hand for GEA to pick up anything loose underneath the boards as he added 16. Robin Le Page was Bredoyles go to guy as he picked up a hard earned 17 points.
MVP – Phil English
Manzur 80 v RGF 58
Manzur and RGF entertained the crowd with a hard fought contest for three quarters before Manzur pulled away in the fourth. Liz Kerr was exceptional as she ran the show, hitting shots and bringing her team mates into the game. RGF were lead by the inside presence of Elliott Weakes and Liam Docherty but Manzur’s experience showed as they closed out the game in some style to record an 80-58 victory. Kerr finished with 25 points for the victors while Elliot Weakes top scored for RGF with 16.
MVP - Liz Kerr
GTS All Stars 73 v Capital PVC 8
In a one sided game, GTS steam rolled Capital PVC to record their first win of the season. Capital looked good in patches and played aggressively and enthusiastically but they must work at their shooting and passing in order to improve this season. GTS were lead by Island Player Sammie Redhead who scored 21 points and she was ably assisted by last seasons Womens B MVP Elka De Carteret who added 14.
MVP – Sammie Redhead
Goldridge Estate Agents 39 v Collins Stewart Heat 95
Collins Stewart Heat made a strong start to the season as they made light work of Goldridge’s second team. Both teams looked rusty as they started the game but it was Collins Stewart that settled first and put together some good runs to open up an unassailable lead by the half. Tom Creed and Andy Maiden got on the end of most of the Heats scoring chances as they bagged 24 and 27 respectively. For GEA only Luke Vaudin made it into double figures as he fought hard for 14 points.
MVP – Andy Maiden
