9th November 2008 - Guernsey 59 (Wright 23, Kerr 18) v Taunton Tigers 73
<< Back

The Guernsey team were on a high as they faced league leaders Taunton at Hamble. Guernsey seemed to settle first as they matched the Tigers aggressive offence. The well drilled Tigers were finding it difficult to get free and get open looks at hoop except for the outstanding Milly Watkins who was on fire in the first half netting 25 points. Guernsey briefly held the lead in the first quarter at 11-9 but a late run by the Tigers saw them lead at the end of one 21-27. The start of the 2nd was a real body blow to Guernsey as the Tigers went on a 9-0 run to push their lead to 15. Guernsey were playing well but the shooting and finishing let them down as they missed too many open chances to close the gap. Watkins again lead the way as the lead was extended 33-44 at the half. Into the second and Guernsey began to fight back. Amy Wright began to find space and the lead was cut to 39-46. Kerr was doing an outstanding job of keeping Watkins quiet as she only managed a further 6 points in the game. But it was again complacency that let Guernsey down as too many shots were missed. Gradually Taunton rebuilt their lead and extended even further to 14 points by the end of the quarter. Into the final stanza and Guernsey were playing some good basketball. Unfortunately as they chased the game, they were exposed and conceded some cheap baskets. The final quarter was even as Tigers ran out winners 59-73.

MVP – Amy Wright

Pat Ogier – “All in all it was a successful weekend. We played well in both games and with a bit more concentration and luck we could have gotten closer to Taunton. Having now played everyone once, we feel comfortable in this league and believe that on our day we can beat anyone. The girls have seen the competition and can’t wait to face all the teams again.

We are learning all the time and realise that we can learn from all the teams we play against, even in defeat. They are experienced teams with very experienced players who have been playing at this level and higher for a number of years. This is our first season and we are very happy with what we are achieving although we are still setting our sights much higher – I am positive there are more wins on the way!”
